Andres Altamirano Photographer
Biography
Andrés Altamirano spent his childhood living in the Ecuadorian Andes and later in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Inspired by his Ecuadorian grandmother, who designed textiles and traditional Andean garments, he became interested in textiles, art and design, later moving to New York City. An internship with Maryam Nassir Zadeh led him to photography and he began to photograph collections of emerging designers in the downtown scene. He currently divides his time between South America and New York City, often working in Europe as well.
“The camera to me is a mediator. When I shoot everything has a role. Both subject and background contribute to the color, texture and construction of the image. I appreciate the moments of surprise and imperfection which can extend the meaning of a photograph.”
He is also involved in Runamaky Projects, a community based workshop focused on Ecuadorian cultural heritage that endeavors to renew and explore traditional textiles.
