Munemi Imai

Biography

International makeup artist Munemi Imai discovered the love for makeup as a young girl growing up in Hiroshima, Japan. Not realizing she could make a complete career out of it, she moved to Tokyo to work as an esthetician. A kindred spirit, it didn’t take long for Munemi to recognize that being kept up in a salon environment was not for her. A former boss asked her if she would be interested in assisting a friend who was a hair & makeup artist on a shoot…Intrigued, she accepted and immediately drawn to the excitement of being on set.

In 2001, Munemi moved to New York City to pursue a freelance career. After assisting Belgian makeup artist Peter Phillips, her individual talent was soon recognized landing her work with French Vogue and British ELLE. Her work has appeared in ad campaigns and press for Marc Jacobs, Altuzarra, Davidoff and Shu Uemura, and has graced major runway shows in NYC, Paris and Milan and in leading publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, InStyle and Vogue. Munemi has also beautified celebrities Solange Knowles, Nina Dobrev, Lili Reinhart, AnnaSophia Robb, Gina Rodriguez, Christy Turlington, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and Naomi Campbell. Her theory on makeup is strong yet simple: “Makeup gives one the ability to become whomever they choose for a moment and then redefine themselves an instant later.”

From 2006 through 2011 Munemi served as Color Creator for Kao’s prestige brand, est cosmetics. While there she acted as a cosmetic color consultant, developing and creating est cosmetics’ seasonal color cosmetic collections by presenting seasonal color palette, texture and trend forecasts. It was during her time there that she realized she wanted to create her own skincare product. She began to research both the creation process and skincare product component.

In 2012, Munemi launched of MŪN – a clean, sustainable and result-driven skincare.
Munemi cultivated her own personal philosophy about beauty through working with faces from all over the world: a clear, glowing complexion is the perfect foundation. Drawing on the minimalist aesthetic of her Japanese heritage, the brand’s line up consists of minimal and essential products.

Munemi continues dedicated to work as a makeup artist and growing the MŪN brand.
